“The alternative is not plan or no plan. The question is: whose planning? Should each member of society plan for himself or should the paternal government alone plan for all? The issue is… spontaneous action of each individual versus the exclusive action of the government. It is freedom versus government omnipotence.” - Ludwig Von Mises

This ad calls the US Navy “a global force for good.” Imperialists have always subscribed to a form of absolutism, which was historically manifested in the divine right to rule and to expand one’s rule at the end of a sword. After statecraft’s general acceptance of the separation of church and state, imperialism’s messianic claims were stripped of any theological rationale. Thus, what remained in imperialism’s gospel was a salvation limited to secular and political values. Whereas the inhumanity of military conquest was once overlooked by evoking notions of divine justice and the afterlife, a secular imperialist state needed a revised messianic justification - enter “humanitarian imperialism.” The notion of forcing “good” on others can only pass as noble and virtuous if it is accompanied by a self-indulgent chauvinism and conceited ethnocentrism, commonly referred to as nationalism. Without this kind of cultural narcissism, the act of imposing one’s values on foreigners can never be sold to the public as pious, altruistic, charitable, etc. It would instead be seen as naked aggression.
